Settled as early as 1830, the community of Fairburn was originally founded as Cartersville in 1833. The community was then called Berryville, and eventually, the name was changed to Fairburn and the town was chartered in 1854. By the time 1884 rolled around, the population of Fairburn was 700 residents and by 1896 it was regarded as a banking town. The population had grown to 1,600 by 1920 but in the following decade would experience a significant decline in population. However, this “town” became a “city” in 1925 with its new charter. The population of Fairburn began increasing again by 1940 and it continued to steadily grow and develop through mid-century.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Fairburn’s Commercial Historic District stands as a reminder of its long, rich history. It encompasses the buildings adjacent to the Atlanta and West Point Railroad, as well as those between Dodd and Smith along West Broad Street. Altogether the district includes two train depots and around twenty commercial buildings.
